Commemorative ceremonies on Corfu and Vido




On the Greek islands of Corfu and Vido commemorative ceremonies marking the 99th anniversary of the disembarkation of Serbs on these islands and in memory of some 250,000 casualties of civilians and members of the Serbian Army were held yesterday and today.

The delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces is headed by Deputy Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Jovica Draganic. With military honours of the Armed Forces of Greece, General Draganic yesterday laid wreaths at the Mausoleum on Vido Island, at the Naval Cross and in the "blue tomb", after which he visited the Serbian House in Corfu with the Serbian delegation.

Deputy Chief of General Staff laid wreaths at the memorial plaque in Gouvia today, where the first Serbian soldiers arrived in early 1916, and at the Monument to heroes of Drina Division and the Monument to Janis Janis Janulis Agios Matheos.

Addressing the audience at the Memorial to heroes of Drina Division, General Draganic said that we are obliged to keep the memory of the glorious victory of the Serbian Army and to teach history to their descendants.

- Fatherland has always been sacred for Serbian soldiers; it was so during the past centuries, it is today and will be in time to come. Members of the Serbian Armed Forces have role models in Serbian army commanders and soldiers from the First World War. Their deeds are present in our consciousness. The memory of the famous Serbian army fighters that laid down their lives for the fatherland will never fade, the General Draganic said.

During his visit, Deputy Chief of General Staff will lay wreaths beside at memorial ossuary Kajmakcalan, at the Serbian and Allied military cemeteries in Zeytinlik and at the memorial dedicated to the breakthrough of the Salonika front in Polykastro.
