Marking the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Cer



The 101st anniversary of the Battle of Cer was marked in Tekeris near Loznica where the Serbian army won one of its greatest victories in the First World War.

The state ceremony, with military honours, at the Battle of Cer memorial complex was led by State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Dragan Popovic. Representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid wreaths at the memorial ossuary in Tekeris. Wreaths were also laid by officials of the cities of Loznica and Sabac, municipality of Krupanj, citizens and representatives of numerous associations.

In the Battle of Cer, which took place in August 1914, brave Serbian army won its first and its allied victory in the First World War.

That battle, according to the chroniclers, is a dazzling example of tactically well designed and delivered military operation and one of the most important and biggest victories of the Serbian army in the First World War.

Members of the Serbian army, led by General Stepa Stepanovic, gave an example of the immeasurable courage and patriotism.

Due to the exceptional merits in command and control, Stepanovic was promoted to the rank of a Field Marshal.

Organizer of the state ceremony was the Government’s Committee for preserving the tradition of Serbian liberation wars.
