Meeting of Ministers of Defence of Serbia and the Russian Federation

Ministers of Defence of the Republic of Serbia and the Russian Federation Bratislav Gasic and Army General Sergey Kuzhugetovich Shoygu met today in "Patriot Park" near the Alabino training field after the final race of the Tank Biathlon. The subject of the meeting between the two officials was the bilateral military cooperation between the two countries, with special emphasis on military-technical cooperation and joint training and exercises.

Minister Gasic pointed out that the bilateral military cooperation had reached a level of great general and political relations between the two countries. He pointed out that since 2012, when 12 joint operations were conducted, the scope of cooperation had greatly increased, and that the Russian and Serbian Armed Forces had had 34 joint activities last year, mainly in the field of training and exercises.

Gasic underlined that it was very important to keep the continuity of meetings at the highest level, expressing his satisfaction that in October this year, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Army General Valery Gerasimov would visit Serbia. He extended an invitation to Minister Shoygu to visit our country in 2016. In his view, the exchange of personnel for training at military schools in Serbia and Russia will contribute to better understanding between the two armies and peoples.

Minister Gasic took the opportunity to appeal to the Russian colleague to influence the shortening of deadlines for the delivery of two Mi-17V-5 helicopters, as the negotiation process for their purchase had entered its final phase.

Minister Shoygu congratulated his Serbian counterpart on the third place at the Tank Biathlon and said that bilateral relations are developing positively. He thanked Minister Gasic for his second visit this year and said that the helicopters the Serbian Armed Forces required would be delivered by the end of the year. Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation confirmed his country's support for the preservation of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia.

Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoygu presented the medals "for combat friendship" to the former and current defense attaché of the Republic of Serbia to the Russian Federation Colonel Zoran Stojkovic and Lieutenant Colonel Marko Markovic.
