209th anniversary of the Battle of Misar marked
Today, in the village of Misar near Sabac, the 209th anniversary of the Battle of Misar was marked, in which the Serbian army, under the leadership of Karadjordje, defeated the Ottoman forces in the First Serbian Uprising.
Wreaths were laid at the memorial to Misar heroes and honours were paid during the state ceremony, which was headed by Deputy Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Milan Popovic.
The wreaths were laid by representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, the City of Sabac and associations devoted to the fostering of traditions of Serbian liberation wars.
Popovic and President of the Assembly of the City of Sabac Slobodan Mirkovic sent a message that the task of preserving the memory of Misar heroes was mutual.
"Our obligation as descendants is to remember those who gave the most valuable - their lives, so that we now live in peace," Mirkovic said, as published on the website of the City of Sabac.
He also said that the respect for the history and celebration of great victories was a necessity for civilization, reminding that, 209 years ago, Serbian villagers defeated the Ottoman army and began the modern history of the Serbian state on Misar.
The Battle of Misar, which took place on 13 August 1806, was one of the most important victories of the rebels over the units of regular armed forces of the Ottoman Empire.
Led by Karadjordje and rebellion nobles of Sabac and Valjevo, Serbs then took a victory that solidified the position of the rebels and dramatically endangered the Ottoman status within the Belgrade Province.
In the center of the Village of Misar, near Sabac, in marking of the centenary of the Battle of Misar, a monument was erected in 1906, and in the next period the museum was built with an exhibition that shows the battle, the events that preceded it, and the famous participants of the battle.
