Marking the 198th anniversary of Karadjordje's death



In the Church of St. George in Topola, the 198th anniversary of the death of the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karadjordje was marked with laying of wreaths and state and military honors.

The wreaths were laid beside the Karadjordje’s sarcophagus by State Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Negovan Stankovic, the representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior, Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, manager of the Karadjordjevic Endowment Dragan Reljic, President of the Municipality of Topola, members of the Association for preserving the tradition of liberation wars until 1918, and other admirers of Karadjordje.

The renowned military leader Karadjordje was born in Visevac Village near Kragujevac Raca, around 1768. The exact date of birth was not recorded.

He was selected to be the leader of the First Serbian Uprising in February in 1804 at the people’s assembly in Orasac.

He was one of the most important military commanders in Serbia between in 1804 and in 1813. His biggest successes on the battlefield were the Battle of Ivankovac in 1805, the Battles of Misar and Deligrad in 1806 and the battles for the liberation of Belgrade in 1807.

Karadjordje was killed on 25 July in 1817 in Radovanjski Lug near Velika Plana.
