147th anniversary of death of Prince Mihailo marked



With laying of wreaths and religious service, the 147th anniversary of death of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic was marked at the St. Michael's Cathedral in Belgrade today.

Обележена 147. годишњица смрти кнеза МихаилаNext to the sarcophagus of Mihailo Obrenovic, wreaths were laid by Head of the Sector of Veteran - Invalid Protection of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Ljubisa Velickovic, delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces headed by Colonel Robert Sreckovic, and representatives of the Crown Council of the Obrenovic Dynasty – “Tempus et meum jus”.

Prior to the beginning of the ceremony, religious service was held by head of the St. Michael's Cathedral Petar Lukic.

Prince Mihailo Obrenovic ruled over Serbia from 1839 to 1842 and from 1860 to 1868. He was one of the most significant Serbian rulers. His rules were marked by further strengthening of the autonomy of the Pashaluk of Belgrade within the Ottoman Empire, and establishment of a number of important institutions of culture, education and science.

He was a great advocate for the establishment of an alliance of Christian Balkan countries, with the goal of their final and complete liberation from the Ottoman rule. He was tragically killed in an assassination in Topcider near Belgrade, on 10th June 1868.
