Anniversary of a unique monument marked



Today, Military Hospital Nis marked the centenary of sanctification of the stone pyramid, the unique monument erected by doctors and staff of the Permanent Morava Military Hospital in Nis in honour of the patients that had died during the epidemic of typhus.

Обележена годишњица јединственог споменика The commemoration was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Land Forces Command, Third Brigade, Russian-Serbian Humanitarian Center, the City of Nis, Nis District and associations that foster the liberation traditions of the Serbian people.

- It is our commitment to remember and honour everything the generations before us did, thanks to whom we now live in freedom – Dr. Sci. Med. Colonel Goran Damjanovic, Manager of the Military Hospital Nis said.

Miodrag Milic, President of the Association for fostering traditions of the liberation wars, stressed that the memory of this monument had been revived five years ago, pointing out that the pyramid represented military healthcare, dedication and love for the patients.

From November 1914 to March 1915, an unprecedented epidemic of typhus took hold in Nis, with a large mortality percentage, and, aside from the wounded, 3,000 patients were treated in the Morava Military Hospital at the time. Up to 36 patients suffering from the disease died daily.
