Meeting of Ministers of Defence of Serbia and Spain

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gasic met today in Madrid with the Spanish Minister of Defence Pedro Morenes, with whom he discussed the bilateral cooperation in the field of defence.

Gasic and Morenes stated that the bilateral relations between Serbia and Spain were traditionally very good and in constant incline. The friendship between the two nations is best proven with the aid of the Spanish Government, companies and citizens after last year’s disastrous floods in our country. Serbia is particularly grateful to the Kingdom of Spain for its principled stance on not recognizing the one-sided declaration of the so-called Kosova, Minister Gasic stressed during the talks.

Gasic and Morenes agreed that the cooperation in the field of defence was very good, and that the pinnacle of cooperation was the joint deployment in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. During the visit, Minister of Defence presented the military memorial medal for the contribution to the defence system of the Republic of Serbia to Spanish Brigadier General Andres Capa Huidobro, who had been the Commander of Sector East in the UNIFIL mission.

Minister of Defence introduced his Spanish colleague with the priorities of Serbia’s OSCE Chairmanship, primarily in connection to the resolution of current crisis situations, and with the priorities of regional cooperation.

During the talks, it was stressed that the European integrations were the key foreign policy priority of Serbia. Serbia appreciates Spain’s commitment and active support to Serbia’s accession to EU, and the actions through the informal Friends of Serbia group within EU. With Norway and Switzerland, Serbia is the only country that is not a member of EU and that has signed the Administrative Agreement on cooperation with the European Defence Agency, which will contribute to the advancement of national special purpose industry.

The Ministers also discussed the cooperation between Serbia and NATO within the Partnership for Peace Program after the adoption of the Individual Partnership Action Plan, as the highest form of cooperation for a country that is not a member of the Alliance.

Today, the MoD delegation visited the special purpose factory INDRA S.A., and will visit the Military Emergencies Unit tomorrow.
