Marking the Victory Day




In honour of victory over fascism, representative of the Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, Chief of General Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic, accompanied by Guard Commander Major General Milomir Todorovic, Brigadier General Dusko Zarkovic, and Deputy Commander of the Air Force, laid wreaths today on the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Avala.

With military honours, sounding of the anthem “Boze Pravde” and lined up unit of the SAF Guard, General Dikovic laid a wreath, with the inscription “In honour of the victory over fascism. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic”.

Chief of General Staff wrote in the memorial book: “Serbia, which gave an indisputable contribution to the allied victory over fascism, proudly keeps the memory of the heroes of WWII, who gave their lives in the colossal battle against fascism.”

In the course of marking the Victory Day, wreaths were laid on the Memorial to Liberators of Belgrade, On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, the wreath was laid by Major General Sladjan Djordjevic. The wreaths carries the inscription: “To the liberators of Belgrade from WWII. Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces.”

On behalf of the Serbian Government, Aleksandar Vulin, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy laid a wreath.

Wreaths were also laid on the Memorial by ambassadors of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, whose fighters, members of the Red Army, had taken part in the liberation of the Serbian capital in 1944.

Ambassadors of allied countries in WWII also laid wreaths on the Monument to Soviet Soldiers killed during the liberation of Belgrade. Wreaths were also laid by representatives of veteran organization and associations.
