With laying of wreaths and flowers at the reconstructed monument to Duke Stepa Stepanovic in Cacak, 86th anniversary of the great military leader’s death was marked today, and representatives of the state and the local self-government, Armed Forces and citizens who paid their respects said that the name of this hero was carved deep in Serbian history.
With his military accomplishments, Duke Stepa Stepanovic obliged the Serbian nation and the citizens of Cacak, the city where he spent the last days of his life.
He was born in Kumodraz near Belgrade, and fought in all Serbian liberation wars from 1876 to 1918. He constantly advanced in service for his capabilities, and he was twice the Minister of War.
During the First Balkan War, after victories over Ottomans, he assisted Bulgarians in the Siege of Adrianople, and the sabre of the Ottoman commander of the city Sukri Pasa that was presented to him is preserved in the National Museum in Cacak.
In the Great War, he was the Commander of the Second Serbian Army, and he won the magnificent victory over Austro-Hungarians on Cer in August 1914, and thus inflicted the first defeat to the central forces in the war.
This accomplishment won him the rank of Duke, and later he fought with our forces in other battles, in the Battle of Kolubara, the retreat across Albania, and the breakthrough of the Thessalonica Front.
Duke Stepa Stepanovic died on 27th April 1929, and the funeral in Cacak was attended by King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, Serbian Patriarch Dimitrije, Duke’s fellow soldiers, and representatives of foreign delegations and Serbian political life.
