Minister of Defence meets UN Secretary-Generals Special Representative in the Central African Republic

On the second day of his visit to the Central African Republic, Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in that country, Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye.

Minister of Defence meets UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in the Central African RepublicGasic and Gaye discussed the political and security situation in the Central African Republic and the activities of the peacekeeping forces in the MINUSCA mission. Minister Gasic informed Gaye about the current deployment of the members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in 11 multinational operations of the United Nations and the European Union and stressed that Serbia would continue to provide its active contribution to the preservation of international peace and security.

In order to achieve better cooperation with the United Nations, since July 2013, our country has had a military representative in the composition of the Permanent Mission of Serbia to the UN. In addition, Serbia has concluded a Memorandum of Understanding with the UN on the contribution to the United Nations Stand-by Arrangements System, so that it is possible to deploy an Air Medical Evacuation Team on short notice and a number of staff officers and military observers, as necessary.

During the discussion, Minister Gasic specially emphasized military medical facilities that our country engages in various peacekeeping missions. Within the Military Hospital Role 2 in the MINUSCA mission there are 68 of our members employed, as well as two military observers and two staff officers, which is, after the UN mission in Lebanon, our largest deployment.

In the UN and EU missions in the Central African Republic there are a total of 76 members of the MoD and SAF employed, including 23 women, with whom Minister Gasic met during the first day of his visit to that country.
