Marking anniversary of Toplica Uprising

Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy Aleksandar Vulin laid a wreath at the monument to Toplica heroes in Prokuplje today on the occasion of marking the 98th anniversary of the Toplica Uprising. The state ceremony was attended by representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces, Prokuplje Municipality, the Association for Preserving Tradition of Serbia Liberation Wars and the descendants of the fallen warriors.

"This is for the first time in the history of Serbia that we celebrate this day of the greatest heroism, the day of the biggest fights and the day that impressed Europe and showed that the Serbs do not appreciate anything like freedom," Vulin said on this occasion.

In this way, Vulin paid tribute to all the heroes who died heroically in 1917 in Toplica uprising that lasted only one month.

Toplica uprising was raised on 26 February 1917 against the Bulgarian occupier and it was the first uprising in the then enslaved Europe.

The uprising was suppressed and in one month only about 20,000 inhabitants were killed in this area and 25 villages were completely destroyed.

As of this year, marking of the Toplice uprising is an integral part of the The State Programme for Commemorating the Anniversaries of Historic Events of the Serbian Liberation Wars.
