Today, at the grand amphitheater of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, the international scientific conference titled The Orthodox world and the Great War was opened by His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej.

While opening the conference, patriarch Irinej stressed that we have learned to celebrate years of success, and that we are obligated to mark a grand event that had cost Europe a lot, perhaps us and our people even more, with every third male killed.

- This war took several million lives and that is terrifying, since there is no greater value than a person – patriarch Irinej stressed, adding that the aim of this conference is to perceive the extents of the war from a historiographical and theological point of view.

The ceremonial opening was enriched by the performance by the Art Ensemble of the Ministry of Defence Stanislav Binicki, conducted by Major Igor Mitrovic, MSc, with Serbian entrees and marches from the Great War period.

In the further course of today’s program, at the Faculty hall, the exhibition “Serbia in the Great War” by Andjelija Radovic from the Military Museum and Predrag Lazetic from the Museum of Yugoslav Aviation was opened. It is dedicated to martyrdom of Serbian soldiers and the role of military clergy in the Great War.
