Serbian delegation paid respects to the killed on Kajmakcalan

Serbian state and military delegation led by Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Policy, laid today wreaths and paid their respects to the Serbian soldiers and heroes killed in the Battle of Kajmakcalan, for the first time since the chapel on the Saint Ilija Peak on Nidze Mountain was built.

Winning Kajmakcalan is militarily inexplicable, Vulin said while arriving at the chapel, adding that the only way to explain this great victory is the Serbian unattainable desire for freedom that was present then and still is today.

The delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Serbia was led by Major General Djokica Petrovic, Commander of the Training Command. After laying the wreaths, the delegations visited the Memorial Bone House at this memorial complex, built in the memory of the Drinska Division and the battles led on Kajmakcalan.

The Serbian delegation climbed the highest spot at 2,521 meters where the chapel and the Memorial Bone House are located, regardless of the strong wind, snow and the temperature of 3 degrees Celsius.

The Battle of Kajmakcalan was the first battle at the Thessaloniki Front that took place on September 12-30 in 1916, when the First Serbian Army managed, with great losses, to take over the Saint Ilija Peak.
