Respects paid to the Serbian Soldiers fallen in Corfu

In the course of marking the centenary of embarking of the Serbian military on the islands of Corfu and Vido, and marking the centenary of the beginning of the Great War, Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic and Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Policy laid wreaths today at the Memorial Plaque to the Serbian Heroes in Gouvia, at the Monument to the Heroes of the Drinska Division and at the Monument to Janis Janulis in Agios Mattheos.

Addressing the visitors, Minister Gasic emphasized that today’s day is a confirmation that the memory of the Drinska Division overcomes it’s place and duration, and that freedom and honor of the Serbian people and state and of a Serbian soldier from the times of the Great War have been raised to the throne of those we remember.

- Although weaker in forces and numbers, our heroes from the Great War achieved the impossible with their faith in themselves and immeasurable love for their country. Thanks to all the unknown and known heroes, their greatest sacrifice – giving their lives for their country – is worthy of greatest respect – Minister said.

- Today, we proudly stand in front of the Memorial which was built from Corfu stone in 1916 by members of the Drinska Division to their fellow soldiers. Serbian heroes of the Drinska Division do not deserve to be forgotten, but for us to be reminded of how each of them became an example of a soldier’s conduct in those four years that were incredibly hard for our country – Gasic stressed, adding that we will not forget about our Greek friends neither – their selfless help and friendship that started then and has successfully lasted for decades.

According to him, the Republic of Serbia has always been committed to the ideas and goals of peace throughout its history.

- By evoking the memory of our ancestors – heroes of the Drinska Division from the Great War, we remind ourselves and all the present and future generations of how the future can be built on the foundation of stable values from the past. Today, we confirm peace, and continue building our country on the foundations set almost a decade ago – Minister Gasic pointed out.

The Delegation of the Serbian Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces headed by Defence Minister includes Major General Djokica Petrovic, Commander of the Training Command, Colonel Sladjan Ristic, Head of the Department for Tradition, Standard and Veterans and Colonel Slobodan Stopa, Assistant Army Operation Commander.
