Cooperation with the UN in peacekeeping operations

State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Zoran Djordjevic received Edmond Mulet, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

Thanking to the United Nations on offered help, and quick involvement in solving problems resulting from floods, State Secretary Djordjevic expressed hope that cooperation will be continued in the next period when Serbia is to face hard work in rehabilitation of the field affected by the disaster.

During the meeting, Djordjevic and Mulet agreed that the involvement of the Republic of Serbia in UN peacekeeping operations is a substantial contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security.

"Attaching great importance to the values of UN and the field of peacekeeping operations in 2013 improved communication with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Department of Field Support, which contributes to a more active participation of our capacities in peacekeeping operations, and the implementation of various other activities in the field of UN peacekeeping operations", State Secretary Djordjevic said.

There are currently 205 members of the Serbian Armed Forces participating in six multinational operations of the United Nations, and 9 other members of the Serbian Armed Forces are engaged in two multi-national operations of the European Union. We are negotiating with relevant UN and EU agencies on the deployment of medical personnel to the UN mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and medical personnel to the EU mission in the Central African Republic and Mali (EUFOR RCA and EUTM Mali). Also, the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces are ready to increase the level of engagement in Lebanon (UNIFIL), within the Italian contingent.

Edmond Mulet, Assistant UN Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, expressed his satisfaction with the high level of professionalism, training and equipment of the Serbian Armed Forces engaged in peacekeeping operations, in what he was personally assured. Regional meeting of countries contributing forces to the United Nations, to be held in Belgrade in October this year, will be an opportunity to consider new modalities of participation in peacekeeping operations.
