State ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Cegar

The state ceremony to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Cegar has been held today at the monument to the Field Marshal Stevan Sindjelic at Cegar near Nis. Wreaths were laid by the delegations of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Policy, the City of Nis, veterans' associations, and organization of the reserve military officers and other institutions and agencies.

On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, wreaths were laid by the delegation consisting of Brigadier General Zelimir Glisovic and colonels Vekoslav Cvetkovic and Dragan Antic.

The ceremony at Cegar was organised by the Serbian Government Board for Fostering the Tradition of Serbian Liberation Wars. The Battle of Cegar is one of the most tragic armed conflicts throughout the period of the First Serbian Uprising, because, at the crucial moment of the battle, Serbian Commander in Chief Stevan Sindjelic fired from his pistol into the gunpowder depot and blew up all the Serbian soldiers and a large number of Turks. Fighting against the superior opponent Serbian rebels gave at Cegar the example of immeasurable courage and patriotism, which remained embedded in the collective consciousness of the nation throughout the next two centuries.
