Cooperation with Greece in the field of defence

Within the regular and planned activities of the Department for International Military Cooperation, Colonel Milan Konjikovac, Acting Chief of the Department for International Cooperation, received Colonel Antonios Kostakis, Defence Attaché of Hellenic Republic.

Colonel Konjikovac pointed out that the defence cooperation with Greece was developed, but there is room for improvement in areas of mutual interest. Ministry of Defence sees future cooperation of the Republic of Serbia in the military education on reciprocal basis, joint training and participation in exercises, cooperation between the centres for peacekeeping operations and exchange of instructors for training for peacekeeping operations, special forces, field of military medicine and military economy cooperation, through joint projects or joint appearance on third markets.

Konjikovac informed his interlocutor about the consequences of the catastrophic floods that have stricken Serbia and suggested certain modalities of assistance of the Ministry of National Defence of the Hellenic Republic. He thanked for the continued support of Greece in achieving the strategic objectives of Serbian foreign policy – membership of the European Union, the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty in Kosovo and Metohija and enhancement of regional cooperation. He also praised the professional attitude of its Armed Forces within KFOR, by which Greece is making a significant contribution to the stabilization of the security situation in Kosovo and Metohija.

Colonel Kostakis pointed out that the common task in the forthcoming period should be finding opportunities to improve bilateral military cooperation in areas of common interest, on a realistic and rational basis. He reiterated the continued support of Greece to Serbia in the process of European integration and readiness for transfer of experiences in terms of security and defence aspects of joining the European Union. Greek citizens sympathize with the population of the Republic of Serbia because of the consequences left by nearly catastrophic flooding throughout the country and discussed the modalities of aid, so that any suggestions are welcome.

At the end of the meeting, they signed the Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan between the Ministries of Defence of Serbia and Hellenic National Defence in 2014.
