Defence of Sabac continues

The situation at the flood defense walls along the Sava River in the city of Sabac is under control. Reinforcing the sandbag walls by placing geotextile and ballast at the base of the walls continues.

Since defence walls in neighboring countries failed when the waters were receding after staying high for days, the emergency headquarters in Sabac, headed by Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, General Ljubisa Dikovic, made a decision to carry out preparations for a possible setting up of a second line of defence in the city. During the day, the band along the tracks, on the right side of the old railway bridge to the settlement of Trijangla will be arranged. The material for the construction of the walls will be stored in carriages at the city’s railway station, from where it is easiest to distribute it along the defense line.

Health protection of the population will be a priority for the staff of the emergency center in Sabac. Sanitary inspectors will control the situation today at facilities opened as reception centers and in schools. If all goes well, classes in schools could begin on Monday, 26th May. Sanitary inspectors will also step up the control of sale of fresh vegetable at green markets. The emergency response team warned the citizens to pay special attention when buying fresh vegetables, especially those which do not require heat treatment, because vegetables from flooded fields are not safe for use. Aerial mosquitoes spraying will also start in the city today.

Expert services have removed dead animals from sites reported to have them. Sanitation of the terrain will continue in the coming days. The Emergency Response Team asked the public to report the presence of corpses of dead animals to local communities and the regional office of veterinary inspection for Macva district.

An increased number of samples are being taken to conduct quality control of the water from the municipal water supply in Sabac. Water has been found to be completely safe for human consumption.
