Signing Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan with Romania

In the ordinary course of planned activities, a meeting has been held today at the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia with the aim of analyzing defence cooperation and the signing the 2014 Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan with Romania.

Colonel Milan Konjikovac, Acting Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation, said that the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries were manifested in developed cooperation in the field of defence, which has been continuously qualitatively improved. He conveyed gratitude to Romania for the principled stance not to recognize the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo, as well as the professional engagement of the Romanian Armed Forces in KFOR to contribute to stability and lasting peace. For Serbia, support of Romania on its path towards European integration is very important.

Romanian Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Leontin Ilie said that, despite the developed cooperation in the field of defence, there is room for improvement, and added that Romania is interested in maintaining the continuity of high-level visits, which represents a significant contribution to bilateral cooperation and also symbolizes the quality of relations between the two countries. He pointed out the readiness of the Romanian side to exchange experiences regarding security and defence aspects of joining the European Union.

Both sides agreed that the crown of cooperation between Serbia and Romania in the field of defence are common exercises, which significantly contribute to raising the operational capabilities of the two armies. Also, it was agreed for the future period to review the modalities of cooperation through education and training activities of the Partnership for Peace programme and the exchange of experiences gained in the peacekeeping operations.

At the end of the meeting, 2014 Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan between the two defence ministries was signed. The planned activities allow continued cooperation in the areas of main interest, through bilateral and trilateral exercises, exchange of experience in the field of movement and transportation, and military medical and military educational cooperation.
