Nebojsa Rodic, Minister of Defence in the caretaker government, ordered today to stop the project that caused a reaction of significant number of citizens in a short period. This is a project that was supposed to be implemented at the Military Medical Academy, and which provides for testing of dogs that can no longer perform the tasks in the units of the Serbian Armed Forces.

At the beginning of the year, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) addressed the Military Medical Academy with a request for co-operation regarding the implementation of the project entitled "Regenerative potential of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and their conjugates with vitamin D in the treatment of peri-implant bone defects."

The project was to be implemented at the Military Medical Academy, the Department for Breeding Laboratory and Experimental Animals of the Institute for Medical Research. The project intended to use dogs in the experiment, primarily because of their physiological properties.

Request for the permission of the project was submitted to the Ethics Committee of the Military Medical Academy for work with experimental animals. Rules of Procedure of the Ethics Committee of the Military Medical Academy for work with experimental animals govern the composition and work of this body. The Rulebook is in accordance with national legislation (Article 35 of the Animal Welfare Act, "Official Gazette of the RS" No. 41/09) and the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for experiments and other scientific purposes.

We note again that the Ministry of Defence insists on consistent application of domestic and international law in any procedure it conducts.

In particular, we inform the public that this kind of supervision over the work of state institutions is effective, regardless of the fact that in this particular case the implementation of the project not been started.
