By an official ceremony held today in the Military Club of Novi Sad, the 11th November - the Day of the Military Medical Centre Novi Sad and 227th year of its existence have been marked.

Welcoming the guests and members of the Military Medical Center Novi Sad, among whom are those in international missions in Congo and Somalia, the Director of the Center Colonel Bratoljub Brkljača pointed out that the hospital staff annually perform about 1500 operations, 120 thousand examinations, treats more than 3000 hospitalized patients and offer more than 400 thousand different medical services. He added that since 6th February the center has been operating interactively with the system of the medical institutions of the Province of Vojvodina and that means that it is at the service and in the function of a city hospital.

An official ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Zoran Popović, Head of Medical Department of the Ministry of Defence, Marjan Novaković, Head of Military Medical Academy, and Stojan Batinić, Commander of the First Army Brigade, representatives of the units of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence, province and city officials and Serbian Orthodox Church.

The history of the Military Hospital is closely connected with the history of Petrovaradinska Tower. Only a few years upon opening of the Berlin Charité, the oldest military hospital in the world, by the Decree of Czar Joseph II in 1786 a Franciscan monastery in the suburban of Petrovaradinska Tower was turned into a military hospital at that time the only one in this part of Europe. In the 19th century some facilities were built up, and after the First World War a larger renovation took place. Since 1952 it has become Hospital of the Military Area of Novi Sad, and since 1984 it has been given its present name of the Military Medical Center Novi Sad. The name and the purpose of the institution have not changed substantially during the 227 years of existence.
