Anniversary of the Battle of Misar



Laying wreaths at the monument to Karadjordje and the heroes of the Battle of Misar in that village, six kilometers from Sabac, was to mark 207th anniversary of the battle of Misar.

The wreaths at the monument to the fallen soldiers in the most important battle and victory in the First Serbian Uprising were laid by the representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy, the Serbian Armed Forces, local government and the endowment societies.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Negovan Stankovic pointed out during the ceremony that the Ministry allocated substantial funds for marking important historical dates.

"This Government is maximally committed to preserving the memory of important historical dates, primarily for marking the anniversaries of battles and events allocating 70 million dinars for these purposes. The amount of 60 million is allocated for the associations that foster the tradition and preserve the memory of those dates, and 15.5 billion dinars is allocated annually for exercising the rights from the field of the of veterans' protection", Stankovic said.

According to the historical archives of Austria, 9,000 Serbian soldiers took part in the Battle of Misar along with 40,000 Turkish soldiers, led by Suleiman Pasha Skopljak, of whom 12,000 were killed in battle and during the withdrawal.

During the battle, Karadjordje used the Austrian knowledge on building fortifications, which, along with the cavalry led by priest Luka Lazarevic, brought the victory.
