Global Peace Operations Initiative Programme
The delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, headed by the Assistant Minister for Defence Miroslav Jovanović had a meeting with a US State Department representative, Michael Smith, the director of the Global Peace Operations Initiative Programme and with the representatives of the US European Command and the Ohio National Guard.
The meeting was focused on the analyzing the previous cooperation and considering the possibilities for its promotion within the Global Peace Operations Initiative Programme.
Jovanović presented the plans of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces for participation in multinational operations that are being realized under the auspices of the United Nations and the European Union, as well as the plans for further developing the capacities of the Military Base “Jug“ aimed to create a training centre for the units that are going to participate in multinational operations of international character. The previous results of the activities undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces within the realization of the activities related to the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 were presented as well.
Smith has emphasized that the Republic of Serbia is one of the best partners which SAD cooperates with within the Global Peace Operations Initiative Programme adding that America supports the measures undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces on the development of the Military Base “Jug“ in accordance with the defined Master Plan. He has confirmed the readiness of the USA to further actively participate in the developing of the Military Base “Jug“ capacities and said that the USA should use the experiences of Serbia regarding the realization of training and participation of units in multinational operations as a model and an example to other countries oriented to participation in similar operations.
Smith and Jovanović concluded that the cooperation within the Global Peace Operations Initiative Programme should be continued according to mutual interests.
During the visit, the SAD delegation will meet with the representatives of the Headquarters, Centre for Peace Support Operations of Joint Operations Command, the Army Command, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and visit the Military Base “Jug“.
