Marking the anniversary of the battle on Cegar



On the hill Cegar today the wreaths were laid marking the 204th anniversary of the Battle of the First Serbian Uprising. State delegation led by State Secretary was headed by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Negovan Stankovic.

The wreaths at the monument to the heroes of Cegar was laid by state delegation, representatives of the Army of Serbia, the city and municipality of Pantelej Police Department in Nis, as well as representatives of associations that foster the tradition of wars of liberation.

The battle of Cegar took place on this day in 1809 when Serbian rebels led by Stevan Sindjelic, despite heroic resistance, failed to achieve victory.

The main direction of the advance of the Turks, with their was moving from Nis over the hill of Vinik as well as routes held before leaving by Peter Dobrnjac and Hajduk Veljko (Copin grave). By noon, Sindjelic and his men from Resava deterred five Turkish attack, and when defeat was imminent, Sindjelic, freeing his surviving soldiers from remaining in the ditch, shot in the powder magazine. The powerful blast killed both Serbian and Turkish soldiers who had previously started the unequal fight hand to hand.

Nis commander Hurshid Pasha, ordered after the Battle of Cegar that a unique monument and testimony to the suffering of a people be built from the skulls of Serbs - Skull Tower in front of a memorial service where a ceremony was held to fallen heroes.

Skull Tower was built from the skulls in late summer in 1809. A total of 952 heads were built into the tower..
