Marking the 68th Anniversary of the Srem Front Breakthrough



In Adasevci near Sid, at the "Srem front" memorial complex, today, the 68th anniversary of the Srem Front breakthrough in World War II was marked with full military and state honours.

The state ceremony was led by the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic, who laid a wreath at the memorial complex on behalf of the Serbian Government

A wreath was also laid by the delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces led by the Deputy Commander of the Training Command Major General Mladjen Nisevic.

The ceremony was attended by officials of AP Vojvodina, Municipality of Sid, diplomatic representatives of countries whose troops took part in the Srem Front battles, and a large number of participants in this great battle who survived it, and representatives of civic associations.

From 21 October 1944 to 12 April 1945, full 175 days, the battle was waged with participation of 250,000 troops from both sides. Besides the units of the Yugoslav Army, the troops of Red Army and the Bulgarian People's Army and Brigade "Italy" also participated in it. In hard and bloody battles, in the snow and wind, about 13,500 Yugoslav troops, mostly young men from Serbia and Montenegro were killed.

Also, 1,100 members of the Red Army, 630 members of the Bulgarian People's Army, and 163 Italians from the composition of Yugoslav units died. On the side of the enemy about 30,000 soldiers were killed.

The Srem Front Breakthrough marked the end of World War II on the territory of the Republic of Serbia.
