Meeting of the representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the UN SC Counter-Terrorism Committee

Delegation of the Ministry of Defence, the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, Military Security Agency and Military Intelligence Agency, headed by the Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Miroslav Jovanovic, took part today in the meeting of representatives of the state bodies of the Republic of Serbia with the representatives of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC), held in Belgrade.

In the speech delivered by the Assistant Minister for Defence, at the opening session of the meeting, he expressed his belief that the MoD is a reliable Partner of the Government and the citizens of the Republic of Serbia in implementing the strategic approach to fight terrorism, which is open to collaboration with leading international organizations (primarily the United Nations).

Ministry of Defence responds in a planned and organized manner to terrorism as a threat and a security challenge, on several levels. At the political level, many activities of international cooperation have been undertaken, consistently implementing principled and peaceful policy of the Government of the Republic of Serbia based on the rule of law, conflict prevention, negotiation, mediation and peaceful conflict resolution. On the doctrinal and normative level, the following documents are implemented: National Security Strategy of the Republic of Serbia, Defence Strategy, Serbian Armed Forces Doctrine, Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and Action Plan for its implementation, UNSC Resolution 1373, as well as all the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

At the security and intelligence level, an efficient and functional intelligence and security system of the Ministry of Defence has been established. VOA and VBA, as part of a unified security and intelligence system of the Republic of Serbia, make a significant contribution to the national security, and through intensive international cooperation they contribute to fighting terrorism in the region and the international community.

Through the reform of the Serbian Armed Forces and activities of specialized elements subordinate to SAF Generalstaff, responses to terrorist threats and possible incidents are planned, continuous training in the country and abroad is conducted, the scope of international cooperation is increased and other appropriate measures are taken. Despite the fact that there is an international operation going on in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, which includes combating terrorism as a part of its mandate, our country contributes to peace and security at the global level through participation in the UN and the EU mandated operations that have multiplied in the past period.

Contributing to the joint efforts of all the state bodies involved in preventing and combating terrorism, Ministry of Defence implements an international standard according to which the national security must not be used as an excuse for abandoning the obligation to respect the law, human rights and freedoms even in the most difficult situations.
