Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
In the memorial complex "Old Fairgrounds" in Belgrade, Serbian government delegation, headed by the President of the Assembly of Serbia Nebojsa Stefanovic, laid wreaths and paid their respects to the victims of the Holocaust in the Second World War, with state and military honours.
"This day is a call to remember, as many brutal crimes remained without punishment, repentance and marks. I wish to believe that the memory of the victims will bind new generations to oppose to all forms of prejudice, racism, chauvinism, anti-Semitism and irrational hatred," Stefanovic said at the "Old fairgrounds" on the occasion of marking the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust in Serbia.Wreaths at the monument to victims of genocide in the Second World War were laid by representatives of the City of Belgrade, the Embassy of Israel and Germany, the municipality of New Belgrade, and representatives of Jewish organizations. The ceremony of paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust was attended by descendants of the victims, former detainees, representatives of the Federation of Jewish Communities, President of the National Council of the Roma, representatives of the Government, the City of Belgrade, members of the diplomatic corps.
The ceremony began by singing the national anthem, "God of Justice", and a brief entertainment program titled "Remember the peoples of the world" was held organized by Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia.
The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust was established on 1st November 2005 by the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, and is marked on 27th January, on the day when Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most notorious death camp in the enslaved Europe was liberated in 1945.
