Agreement on destruction of surplus napalm powder signed



United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Serbia William Infante and Polyeco SA company signed an agreement under which the SA Polyeco will carry out destruction of napalm powder that is a part of the current surplus in the possession of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia, based on the plans and needs of the Ministry of Defence.

The destruction of napalm powder costs147,400.00 euros, and most of the necessary funds, or 94,200.00 euros, has been provided by the Federal Republic of Germany. Approximately 110 tons of napalm powder will be transported and destroyed in Sweden, according to the environmental standards, in the next three and a half months.

The napalm powder destruction campaign is a part of the Conventional Ammunition Stockpile Management Capacity Development Programme in the Republic of Serbia (CASM), a joint program of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia, the United Nations Development Programme and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

CASM project activities include disassembly and removal of surplus napalm powder and about 1133.86 tons of ammunition filled with white phosphorus, development of ammunition depot infrastructure and development of capacity for ammunition management system in depots in Mrsac and the Mirnicka River, as well as improvement of infrastructure of disassembly facilities in TRZ Kragujevac.

The CASM project will contribute to increasing the level of human security in the Republic of Serbia and strengthening the international combat against proliferation of weapons and ammunition through illegal channels.

The destruction of napalm powder is the first in the row of the planned activities within the CASM project.
