Defence consultations with Spain



Head of the International Military Cooperation Colonel Ljubomir Nikolic met today with a delegation of the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Spain, led by the Head of the General Directorate for Planning and International Affairs Vice Admiral Ignacio Rubio Orcada as part of regular bilateral defense consultations.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the level reached in bilateral military cooperation while additional opportunities for improvement in cooperation were also identified. They agreed that the high-level visits and regular bilateral defense consultations testified to a high level of understanding between the two countries.

Focal areas of cooperation between the countries were exchange of experience and joint participation in multinational operations, as well as the cooperation of the special units.

Joint participation in multinational operations started in 2010 and this represents a qualitative step forward in cooperation. Military education and defense industry cooperation, and the cooperation of joint operational commands have been identified as potential areas for improvement for future cooperation.

Vice Admiral Rubio said that Serbia was a strategic partner of the Kingdom of Spain in the Western Balkans. Spain will intensify in the future and expand cooperation in the defense field.

After bilateral consultations, Colonel Nikolic and Vice Admiral Rubio signed the bilateral military cooperation plan between the two defense ministries for 2013.

The delegation of the Spanish Ministry of Defence was also received by Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Miroslav Jovanovic.

On this occasion, Assistant Minister Jovanovic informed his guests of the political and security situation in the region, the priorities of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the results of defence system reforms. Both sides expressed particular satisfaction with the joint deployment of the UN mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL.
