President Nikolic at the Great School Lesson in Kragujevac

The traditional Great School Lesson has been held today at Sumarice Memorial Park in Kragujevac, comemorating the National World War II Victims Remembrance Day when students and professors of the First Kragujevac Grammar School were executed.

On that occasion, the President of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolic, laid a wreath at the memorial to the victims, and wreaths in front of the monument "V3" in Sumarice were laid by the representatives of the Serbian Government and the National Assembly, the Ministry of Defence, representatives of the diplomatic corps, among them the ambassadors of Germany, Palestine, Slovakia and Belarus, representatives of local government and veterans' associations.

Symbolically, the first to lay the wreaths by mounds of the executed students and professors, were representatives of the First Kragujevac Grammar School, and the prayer service for victims was served by Bishop Jovan of Sumadia.

"The Great School Lesson " is an anti-war event organized in Kragujevac every year to warn the world that such a crime should never happen again. On 20th and 21st October 1941, in Kragujevac, German occupying forces shot several thousand civilians in retaliation, which is considered one of the most tragic events in the territory of Serbia in the Second World War. For Kragujevac history, the date of 21 October, which also became the national holiday as of the last year, is a special date which is marked by a number of events throughout the month.
