Exhibition of paintings of Dusan Jevtovic in the Central Military Club



A retrospective exhibition of paintings "Life is a Celebration" by one of the most prominent naive artists in the world, painter Dusan Jevtovic, has been opened tonight in the Gallery of the Central Military Club of the Republic of Serbia.

The exhibition, which is a kind of homage to the artist on the occasion of the anniversary of his death, was opened by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and Information Miroslav Tasic, and Nina Krstic, author of the exhibition and director of the Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art in Jagodina, and Director of the Media Centre "Odbrana" Lieutenant Colonel Slavoljub Markovic talked about the exhibition.

- The exhibition "Legacy of Leposava Lepa Perovic", which was set up in our gallery, which was closed on Saturday, was declared the event of the month. The exhibition that is to be open tonight, with no great pretensions, will be the event of the season – Lieutenant Colonel Slavoljub Markovic said at the opening ceremony of the Central Military Club, announcing a rich artistic programme that this institution prepared for the Belgrade audience in the forthcoming period.

Opening the exhibition, State Secretary Miroslav Tasic said that after the death of the artist, his work probably become a part of an eternal Serbian art history museum and the heavenly ministry of culture.

- I had the great honour that I knew Dusan Jevtovic. Our last meeting was in the showroom of the Historical Museum of Serbia – Tasic said and thanked everyone who participated in the preparation of the exhibition, which, he said, confirms that the Central Military Club remains a showcase of the culture and the arts.

According to Nina Krstic, the author of the exhibition, Dusan Jevtovi? spent five decades of everyday artistic work persevering in the idea of painting the correct order of virtues in the life of a small proud nation.

- Abundance of population, love of community and metaphorical celebration of the fact that the power of the Serbian people is in the community, are the main themes of all of his outstanding achievements, from the beginning to the end of his work – Nina Krstic pointed out.

The exhibition, which is a collaborative effort of the "Odbrana" Media Centre and the Museum of Naive and Marginal Art, includes around sixty works of this classic of naive art – oil paintings, drawings, prints and sketches, and the audience will be able to peer into the intimacy of the artist’s life in the Small Gallery of the Central Military Club. There, in the reconstructed studio where the artist created for the last 50 years, objects that were part of his everyday life are exposed.

Dusan Jevtovi? exhibited at the representative exhibitions in the country and in the important international exhibitions. His works are present in many museums and galleries, and in private collections at home and abroad. He has been published in all national and international encyclopaedias of naive art. He has received numerous national and international awards. He died in Belgrade on 6 October 2011.

In the preparation of the exhibition, which will be open at the Central Military until 30 October, the author was helped by the daughter of the late artist, Ivanka Jevtovic, and Dragana Markovic, the Editor-in-Chief of Publishing Activities of Odbrana MC.
