Marking the 144th anniversary of death of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic



In the Central Church in Belgrade a memorial service was held on the occasion of the commemoration of 144th anniversary of the death of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic.

His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej held a memorial service and said that Prince Mihailo was fighting for the same goals that we seek today, a better Serbia in the European context and that people should not forget great persons and statesmen, such as Prince Mihailo Obrenovic.

After the service, besides the sarcophagus of the Serbian ruler a ceremony of disclosing state and military honors started, with laying of wreaths.

Wreaths were laid by the delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

Prince Mihailo Obrenovic ruled Serbia on two occasions from the 1839 to 1842 and from 1860 to 1868. His reign was marked by further strengthening the autonomy of Belgrade pashaluk within the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of a number of important cultural, scientific and educational institutions.

He was assassinated in Kosutnjak on the 10 June (29 May) 1868.
