Visit to the storage-site for the explosive ordnance

Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac and Chief-of-Staff of Serbian Armed Forces Miloje Miletic visited today the newly-built storage-site for the explosive ordnance in Central Serbia.

- Since 2007, one of the biggest security challenges which the Ministry of Defence faced was the excess of the explosive ordnance which were out of the storage-sites, namely in the open. 11.5 thousand tons were in question, and we allocated €15 million in the last four years for the construction of 12,000 m2 of the new storage-site – Minister Sutanovac said, emphasising that, as of July 1, 2011, all explosive ordnance are stored adequately and according to the regulations.

The fact that the explosive ordnance were placed in the open, Minister Sutanovac added, presented a big threat for the members of the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as for the citizens themselves.

- The storage of the explosive ordnance in the adequate storage-sites is one of big successes, having in mind that, since the early nineties, they were placed in the open and that many accidents were taking place – Minister Sutanovac concluded

The explosive ordnance storage-sites in Serbia are being renovated and adapted to the new standards. The road infrastructure and hydrant network that surrounds them are also being renovated. Earlier, the explosive ordnance were kept in wooden barracks and in the open, which caused numerous accidents.
