Memorandum on Gender Equality signed



Secretary of State for Defence Dr Tanja Miscevic and Director of the UN Women Sub regional Office for Central and Southeast Europe Erika Kvapilova signed today a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Ministry of Defense and the Agency for gender equality and empowering women - UN Women.

Signing this document will enable further development of cooperation with UN Women Agency, which will provide specific technical and financial assistance in implementing Resolution 1325 of UN Security Council in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Army as envisioned by the National Action Plan.

Speaking about his character, Secretary Miscevic expressed her satisfaction with the fact that signing this Memorandum during Belgrade Security Forum rounds up the discussion concerning the role of women in the security sector and state leadership.

- The main goal of the Memorandum of Understanding will be implementation of the National Action Plan which is linked to the implementation of resolution 1325 dedicated to women in the security sector. Thesse are most concrete steps which can ensure that the provisions of NAP adopted last year are enforced - said Secretary Miscevic, adding that in the coming years we expect direct assistance as to how to approach the implementation of the resolution, and the strengthening of regional cooperation.

Director of of UN Women Sub Regional Office for Central and Southeast Europe Erika Kvapilova said that the signing of cooperation agreements would contribute to opening new discussions and making the topic relating to women in the security sector better known.

- We had extensive consultations on these issues and by signing this document we have set the basis for future development of our relations and the implementation of the NAP provisions. Today's signing is supported not only by the UN Women Agency, but also by the Kingdom of Norway - said Erika Kvapilova at the end of her address.
