Members of the Armed Forces help building houses for the blind

The compound of six houses, "Street of Light", to be used by the blind and visually impaired people has been officially opened today at the House of the Blind in Pancevo. The construction of one of the houses for the blind in Pancevo was funded with the money collected by the members of the Serbian Armed Forces and the building construction was supported by a humanitarian fund "Light", many non-governmental organizations, embassy of Malaysia in Belgrade and the local government.

"We are delighted to cooperate with the Serbian Armed Forces - Stevan Simic, president of the humanitarian fund "Light", said."The Armed Forces made a campaign among the members of the military who collected five hundred thousand dinars for our campaign "Help the Blind of Serbia", for which we are very grateful", Simic said.

A spokesman for the fund "Light", Aleksandar Simic, pointed out that one of the first campaigns of that non-governmental organizations was the campaign "Help the Blind of Serbia" which was initiated four and a half years ago.

"We started with an idea to help the entire population of the Blind of Serbia. It is about several thousand people who generally do not have housing, as it was often the case in the field of social protection. This home is the only home for the blind that existed in the former Yugoslavia. Of 130 residents who are at the home today, there is a large number of people who have been there since the time of that Yugoslavia. Bad situation in the main building of the home forced us to find the only logical solution - the construction of new facilities, a spokesman for "Light" said.

The construction of the first three facilities was donated by NGOs and the Apatin Brewery, and the campaign was then joined by the Serbian Armed Forces, Telenor, Malaysian Embassy and the local government that has invested three million dinars in heating installation. In the six houses 36 residents of the home will be accommodated. The facilities are fully equipped with furniture and turnkey ready to welcome their new tenants.

"Street of Light" was supported by the artists and Olja Ivanjicki and Cuca Soki? who donated the money from selling their paintings for the charity for the completion of this project.
