Marking the death of King Petar I Karadjordjevic



In the St. George Church on Oplenac in Topola the 90th anniversary of the death of King Petar I the Liberator was marked today.

Central state ceremony was led by Minister of Culture, Predrag Markovic, who laid the laurel wreath on the sarcophagus of King Oplenac. The wreaths were also laid in the north pew by a high delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Army General Staff, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, representatives of Topola and Aran?elovac, Karadjordjevic family, the Foundation of King Peter and non-governmental organizations that foster the tradition of Serbian liberation wars.

In the Mausoleum at Oplenac the service was conducted by Bishop Jovan of Sumadija with the help with of Oplenac church clergy and the "Oplenac choir.

After the commemoration Minister Markovic in the house of King Peter I in Oplenac in Topola opened the exhibition "Peter I - King of the warrior" whose authors are historians Nebojsa Damjanovic and Dejan Ristic. The exhibits are from the Historical Museum of Serbia, the Archives of Serbia, the Yugoslav Film Archive and the Legacy of King Petar Karadjordjevic.

King Peter I Karadjordjevic named Oslobodilac (the Liberator), died on 16 August 1921 in Belgrade. He succeeded to the throne after the assassination of King Alexander I and Queen Draga Obrenovic in 1903.

His rule was marked by the Austro-Hungarian excise war, the Balkan and First World War after which the Serbs, with a large number of casualties and the military victory at Kumanovo, the Bregalnica, Cer, Kolubara and after the Allies’ breakthrough of the Thessalonica front, joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes - later Yugoslavia.
