The Fifth World Military Games Open in Rio de Janeiro



Ceremonial parade of the participants in the Games, at the João Havelange Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, opened the 5th World Military Games.

After an introductory speech by the CISM President, Colonel Kalkaba, the Games were opened by the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff. The Olympic torch was lit by the legendary Brazilian football player Pelé.

Members of the armed forces from 111 countries worldwide, with more than 7,000 competitors are participating in the "Games of Peace" as the motto of the competition says.

Participants are competing for medals in 20 sports in men's and women's competitions.

The first participation of our athletes at the 5th World Military Games were successful. The first to come to the start line were competitors in marathon, which was held within the international marathon of Rio de Janeiro 2011. Senior Sergeant Goran Cegar took the 35th place (on the start list of 55 competitors), and professional soldier Ksenija Bubnjevi? won the 11th place (17 competitors on the start list).

Our athletes competed in shooting skills in the discipline rapid fire pistol. Captain Sasa Petrovic won the 30th place in the competition of 130 competitors, while Cadet Tanja Tacic won the 30th place in the competition of 50 competitors.

Tomorrow, according to the schedule, the Serbian military athletes are to continue in the competition in parachuting, marksmanship qualifications (Sasa Petrovic and Tanja Tacic), qualifications in triple jump (Sergeant Miroslav Bojovi? ) and short distance orienteering (Captain Blazo Maksimovic and Senior Sergeant Igor Vukovic).
