Marking of the 143rd anniversary of the death of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic



In the Cathedral Church in Belgrade today, the remembrance ceremony and commemoration was held on the occasion of 143rd anniversary of the death of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic – one of the most important new-age Serbian rulers.

His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej held a memorial service to Prince Mihailo and said that the people must remember great men and statesmen, such as Prince Mihailo Obrenovic.

After the remembrance ceremony, beside the sarcophagus of the Serbian ruler in the Cathedral, state and military honors and wreaths-laying ceremony were held

Wreaths were laid by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Negovan Stankovic and the delegations of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff.

Prince Mihailo Obrenovic ruled Serbia in two occasions from 1839 to 1842 and from 1860 to 1868. His reign was marked by further strengthening of the Belgrade pashalik autonomy within the Ottoman Empire, and the establishment of a number of important cultural, scientific and educational institutions.
