Conference concerning safety of military traffic participants

The Military Academy is holding the Fifth Expert Conference on Safety of Military Traffic Participants.

Opening the Conference, Brig Gen Srdjan Novakovic, Chief of the General Logistics, Department of Material Resources, MoD, said that the Armed Forces in the last five years have been investing every effort to enhance the safety of military traffic participants.

- For the purpose of preventive action, such gatherings are organised every five years to contribute to improving the security of military participants in traffic, in terms of reducing the number of persons who have died in accidents or suffered serious injuries. We expect this expert conference , which has an international character, to contribute to this end, Brigadier General Novakovic emphasized, among other things.

Colonel Zeljko Rankovic mentioned the fact that in the period from 2006 to 2011, six people were killed in traffic accidents, while 140 military traffic participants had heavier or lighter injuries.

- Analyses we conduct on a regular basis show that the most common causes of accidents, as many as 63 percent, are due to carelessness and disregard for traffic laws. Therefore, similar types of accidents such as vehicle head impact crashes and side impact crashes repeat. This tells us that we need to pay even more attention to training of professional drivers of military vehicles, which must not be completed by their employment. The vision of the Ministry of Defence for the year 2012 without military death toll of road users should be in our minds not only during this conference, Colonel Rankovic noted, among other things.

During the seminar, the existing safety system of military traffic participants, reasons of traffic accidents, the normative regulations, the consequences of the new Law on Road Safety, transport of cargo in MoD and SAF, training and advanced training of military drivers, organization and work of military traffic police and preventive campaigns aimed at increasing the safety of military traffic participants will be discussed.

The conference is organized by the General Logistics Department of Material Resources Sector and the Military Academy. Participants in the conference are the leading experts in the field of traffic and transportation in the MoD and SAF, representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Traffic Safety Agency, Belgrade Faculty of Traffic and Transport Engineering, Novi Sad Technical Faculty, Chamber of Commerce, and other educational and vocational institutions of Belgrade and Serbia, responsible for improvement of road safety in the Republic of Serbia.

The international character of the expert conference was given by the participation of representatives of the European Commission for Road Safety in the Armed Forces.
