The Day of the Guard marked



The Day of the SAF Guard – the 6th May was marked today in the “Dedinje” barracks in Belgrade. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Milan Bjelica, Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic, members of the staff members of GS and retired members of the Guard.

Guard commander Colonel Milos Todorovic said that members of this elite unit of our armed forces are ready to resist at any time the greatest possible risks and defend the most cherished and sacred values of our fatherland.

- The Guard is a respected and loved unit, which has been doing everything to raise the reputation and glory of our army in almost two centuries since its establishment. It has been fully professionalized since the 1st March and ready to respond to the tasks and challenges at any moment – as colonel Todorovic said.
By celebrating St. George’s Day, as the patron saint’s day of the Guard, this unit continues its 181 year long tradition. On this day in 1830 by the orders of the Serbian ruler Prince Milos, the first company of the Knez (principle) Guard was lined up, which consisted of 120 mature and most prominent young men from all the districts (nahija) in the Serbian principality.

Serbian Army Guard is tasked with performing military honors and protocols for domestic and foreign government officials and for securing important military and government figures and special purposes facilities.

Congratulations on the occasion of Guard units were also sent to members by the Serbian President Boris Tadic, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac and Chief of General Staff general Miloje Miletic.
