National defense School students visit Italy on a study tour

A group of students of the 54th class of general staff and 57th class of command staff college and lecturers of the School of National Defense began a three-day study tour in central Italy, whose aim is the study of Allied operations during the famous battle of Monte Cassino and Rome, conducted from September 1943 to June 1944.

According to Colonel Marko Zelenovic, the Chief of General Staff Training and University Security Studies, studying these operations should encourage discussions and review of contemporary military issues and requirements of participation and conducting multinational operations.
The expert consultant during the study visit is Dr. Neil Bar, a professor of military history at King's College London, who specializes in the battles in the Mediterranean during World War II. In his opening remarks, he pointed out that the interactive method of work would contribute to the fruitful exchange of views such as deployment planning and execution of the said operations, and to serve as an incentive for current and future thinking on the strategic aspects of command and control.

This study tour is part of a broader, two-year project in the trilateral cooperation between Serbia, Norway and Great Britain, during whose realization various forms of education of Serbian Army officers trained at the general and command staff level. This group of officers in Italy as well as representatives of donor countries, is also accompanied by the military attaché of Great Britain in Serbia Colonel Nigel Fen and Ingjerd Kroken of the Ministry of Defence of Norway.

During their stay in Italy, the delegation of the School of National Defense and donor countries will lay wreaths at the cemetery of the Allies at Monte Cassino.

The study tour ends on Saturday, when participants will analyze the final battle for the liberation of Rome , and later a visit to the city is scheduled.
