Marking the breakthrough of Srem front



With the military and state honors today at the Adasevci in Sid the 66th anniversary of the breakthrough of Srem front in WWII was marked, which signified the end of the Second World War in Serbia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic and Serbian Army Chief of General Miloje Miletic, as well as representatives of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, SUBNOR and delegations from embassies of the Allies in World War II laid commemorative wreaths at the memorial complex "Srem Front” the wreaths on behalf of the Government of Serbia and the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia

Srem front was one of the most difficult and most tragic Serbian battlefields in World War II, where the war in trenches lasted from October 1944 to 12 April 1945 with over 250,000 soldiers fighting on both sides. During the battles, 13,000 members of People's Liberation Army were killed, but the exact number of those who perished was never exactly accounted for.

After the breakthrough of Srem front, in conjunction with the offensive of the Allies, the Yugoslav forces in less than a month freed the whole territory of Istria and the Slovenian coast, while some units reached as far as Trieste and Karavanka.
