Serbian peacekeepers go to Lebanon

The first group of SAF members within the Spanish contingent to participate in UNFIL traveled to Lebanon today. In this six-month mission, five staff officers will be engaged with Zoran Nikolic as the head of the mission and team leader.

SAF team is made up of Lt. Col. Nenad Sretenovic, LT. Col. Jadranko Jukic and major Djordje Turukalo and Major Nikola Otasevic.

We are completely equipped and prepared for the realization of any assigned task as the team has three lieutenant colonels and two majors. WE will be performing tasks which we usually do as our regular job. I expect that the mission will be a complete success and that we will be able to prove the trust deposited in us and to improve the reputation of SAF and the Republic of Serbia as Lt. Col. Nikolic stressed before the departure to Lebanon.

- We have had extensive experience in cooperation with the members of foreign armies. I also expect that this mission in Lebanon will be a completely new experience, a different form of staff work in a different environment. The importance of UNFIL mission is in expanding knowledge, especially in working in multinational surroundings and in foreign countries, as Lt. Col. Nenad Sretenovic, one of team members, said.

The members of the missions are engaged on control of ceasefire between opposed sides, verification of retreat of Israeli defense forces and helping the Lebanese government to effectively take control on its territory. UNFIL mission is a mediating mission between conflicting sides, by performing reconnaissance, paroling, and reporting on possible incidents. Besides these tasks, UNFIL helps normalization of life conditions, by supporting humanitarian operations and establishing the rule of law in Lebanon.

The UN mission UNFIL was established by the UN SC Resolution 425 as of 19 March 1978 in line with the Resolution of the SC of UN 1937 as of 2010, with the mission mandate prolonged by 31 August 2011.
