Parliament adopts the decision on military obligation suspension
MPs of the National Assembly of Serbia today adopted a decision to suspend military service obligation which, because of the ongoing professionalization of the Serbian Army, the commitment of joining the Army when the military recruits finish their term will be suspended.
The decision will come into force eight days after its publication in the Official Gazette and shall come into force on January 1, 2011 which envisions hat only those who volunteer will sign up for military duty.
The MPs adopted the amendments of the military, labor and material obligations law, which will provide a legal framework for voluntary military service after the effective date of the Decision on the termination of military service.
Voluntary military service under arms will be allowed women too and people in the reserve forces who have served their term in civil service or military service without arms. Following the suspension of military service obligation, conscripts becomes a person who voluntarily applies for military duty.
The President of Serbia, at the proposal of the Minister of Defense, may shorten the duration of military service, while the obligation to serve in the reserve will be imposed upon those who served weapons, without weapons or voluntarily.
Defence Minister will propose for each calendar year, the number and structure of people (by rank, gender, services, specialties and units) who will conclude a contract of engagement in the active reserves.
These adopted solutions, as expected, will provide rationalization of defense expenses that are directed at the development in accordance with real possibilities of Serbia or the real risks and threats to security of the country.
