Military Medical Academy boosts capabilities and improves patient care

Continued investment in infrastructure, state-of-the-art medical equipment and personnel is boosting the Military Medical Academy’s capabilities, ensuring the highest standards of healthcare and access to advanced methods of treatment.
The Head of the Military Medical Academy, Colonel Nenad Perišić, MD-PhD, stated that the Military Medical Academy is a highly specialised tertiary care scientific and educational institution with a 182-year-old tradition. He further noted that the MMA has been one of the pillars of Serbia’s health care system for many decades.

- The building itself has 180,000 square metres of floor space and more than 1,000 hospital beds. The Military Medical Academy comprises 26 clinics, 11 institutes, a Diagnostic and Polyclinic Centre, an Urgent Treatment Centre and a pharmaceutical services department. It is also important to stress that we serve as a major training hub for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Defence - Colonel Perišić said.

Thanks to the Ministry of Defence and the Republic of Serbia, he said, substantial funds have been invested in the refurbishment of the Military Medical Academy’s infrastructure and in the procurement of new, state-of-the-art medical equipment.
- Two new cooling towers with accompanying cooling machines have been delivered, significantly improving the ventilation system at the Military Medical Academy. In addition, partial roof repair has been carried out, and two dining facilities for MMA employees, outpatients and visitors have been refurbished. Plans are underway to design a sterile liquids production unit, and to modernise the ultrapure water production system. The refurbishment of 6,000 square metres of flooring at the MMA Polyclinic has also been contracted, while preparations are underway for a reconstruction project aimed at improving the Military Medical Academy’s energy efficiency and environmental sustainability - Colonel Perišić said.

Since October 1, CyberKnife and Linear Accelerator treatments have been available at this military medical institution to all members of the military and persons insured through the National Health Insurance Fund. This will help the state save substantial funds by reducing expenditure on treatments abroad.

According to Colonel Perišić, the goal of the Military Medical Academy’s management and the Military Health Department is to retain their medical staff while recruiting new medical and non-medical personnel.

- For this reason, public recruitment competitions were launched in March and June of this year for positions at the Military Medical Academy and other military healthcare institutions, and are still ongoing. In addition, the Ministry of Defence has been awarding scholarships to students of secondary medical schools for many years, which is very important to these young people, as they are guaranteed employment upon graduation. The MMA is also willing to accept young doctors who have graduated from other medical faculties in Serbia for specialty and subspecialty training. What is important is that healthy competition helps create a highly skilled workforce - said the Head of the Military Medical Academy.
