Ministers Gašić and Mali inspect ongoing construction work at Aeronautical Museum
Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić, accompanied by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Siniša Mali, conducted a construction site inspection at the Aeronautical Museum military complex in Surčin today, where works are currently underway to adapt and modernise the existing building, alongside the construction of multi-purpose hangars and dedicated spaces for the international exhibition EXPO 2027.
During the inspection, Minister Gašić said that once the works were complete, the museum workshop’s maintenance and conservation capabilities would be significantly enhanced through the procurement of modern machinery and equipment. The delegation discussed the exploits and achievements of our Air Force, as well as its future development. Referring to the acquisition of Rafale multi-role combat aircraft, Minister Gašić emphasised that the Serbian Armed Forces were working to fulfil their contractual obligations in line with the agreed schedule.
- We will be ready to receive the new equipment in accordance with the terms of the contract. Between 2012 and 2026, RSD 1.3 trillion was invested in the Serbian Armed Forces. By contrast, in the period between 2000 and 2012, only 56 billion was invested, which is a huge difference - said the Minister of Defence.Minister of Finance Siniša Mali noted that “works are now in full swing, with approximately two hundred workers working day and night to ensure the Aeronautical Museum is fully restored by May next year.”
- There is a lot of history in this museum, the history of our aviation, our heroes, our armed forces, our battles, so the museum deserves to be properly restored - Minister Mali said, adding that, in addition to the renovation of the Museum building, three completely new hangars are being constructed. These will house a new exhibition, a restoration workshop, visitor amenities, souvenir shops, a restaurant, and many other facilities for visitors of all generations.
The Minister of Finance expressed his gratitude to Minister Gašić and the Serbian Armed Forces for their commitment to the project and emphasised that “in addition to being a source of pride for the Armed Forces, the museum preserves the history of our aviation and bears witness to the road Serbia has travelled over the past decades”. Minister Mali announced that future displays at the museum would also showcase new technologies, offering a new, different experience for both domestic and foreign visitors. The Head of the Aeronautical Museum’s Department for Museum Activities, Senior Curator Mirjana Novaković Munišević, emphasised that the comprehensive adaptation and modernisation of the facility would restore the international prestige the museum had once enjoyed.
- Plans include a complete refurbishment of the building, including all necessary infrastructure works to ensure the preservation and display of all the museum’s objects across 20 collections. The most important among these is our rich aircraft collection, which presents more than a century of primarily military, but also civil aviation history. The permanent exhibition will remain the mirror of our museum, presenting a century of national aviation in an interactive way, supported by multimedia content - said Senior Curator Novaković Munišević.The works include the construction of three new multi-purpose buildings, alongside a complete refurbishment of the museum’s glass façade, interior and exterior spaces, as well as the installation of lifts and wheelchair ramps.
During the site inspection, Minister Gašić was accompanied by the Head of the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General Zlatko Mišić, and the Head of the Department for Tradition, Standard and Veterans, Colonel Đorđe Kalanj.
