Telecommunications Service Day and Signal Brigade Day commemorated
The Serbian Armed Forces today marked Telecommunications Service Day and Signal Brigade Day, as well as two jubilees — the 110th anniversary of the Telecommunications Service and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Signal Brigade.
A formal ceremony marking the anniversary of the Telecommunications Service was held at the Guard Club in Topčider. The event was attended by the Deputy Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Tiosav Janković, members of the Chief of the General Staff’s collegium, and representatives of Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces units.
Addressing those present, Major General Mile Vitezović, Head of the Telecommunications and IT Department (J-6), reflected on the service’s long-established tradition and the generations of its personnel who helped ensure reliable and uninterrupted communications. He highlighted the vital role of modern communications systems in enabling the Serbian Armed Forces to carry out their missions and tasks, and stressed the importance of modernisation, adoption of new technologies, and investment in the knowledge and professional development of personnel.
General Vitezović spoke about the Service’s current priorities, highlighting the digitalisation of the Serbian Armed Forces through the Digital Army project, the development of special communications systems and the application of artificial intelligence, including the development of the first military digital assistant.
- We are living in an era of rapid technological change and new security challenges. Digitalisation, robotisation, information security, cyber defence and artificial intelligence are no longer mere support tools. They represent some of the key factors in fulfilling our missions and tasks. That is why we must continue modernising and investing in new technologies and, above all, in our people — because the knowledge and dedication of our experts represent our greatest strength – General Vitezović concluded.
The ceremony also included the premiere screening of the documentary titled The Telecommunications System of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, produced by the “Zastava Film” Military Film Centre, as well as a stage performance entitled On the Line with the Homeland. To mark the occasion, General Vitezović presented letters of appreciation and plaques to distinguished civilian organisations, military institutions and units.
Earlier today, a military ceremony commemorating Signal Brigade Day and the 20th anniversary of its establishment was held at the Banjica barracks. On that occasion, awards were presented to outstanding individuals and wreaths were laid at the memorial located within the barracks grounds.
Telecommunications Service Day and Signal Brigade Day commemorate September 20, 1916, when the Regulation on Military Telegraph was adopted, laying the foundations for the signals service in the Serbian Army.
