Formal ceremony marks 220th anniversary of Battle of Mišar

A state ceremony commemorating the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Mišar was held today in the village of Mišar near Šabac.
The ceremony was led by Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, Envoy of the President of the Republic, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs and Chair of the Government Committee for Nurturing the Traditions of the Liberation Wars of Serbia.

The formal ceremony held at the Cultural Centre in Mišar was attended by Serbian Government ministers, members of the Defence Minister’s and the Chief of the General Staff’s collegiums, representatives of state institutions, religious communities, the diplomatic corps, local self-government, various associations, as well as the descendants of the heroes of Mišar.

In her address, Minister Đurđević Stamenkovski highlighted that the state continues to draw upon the legacy of that struggle for liberation, because the country “has risen like a phoenix from the ashes”. She added that in paying tribute to the heroes of Mišar, we should ask ourselves what kind of Serbia they had fought for.
-  Their Serbia is the Serbia that continues to prove today that it is independent and free, and that still has to prove this every single morning, confronted by various attacks, internal subversions, external pressures, and all those wishing to bring Serbia to its knees – said Minister Đurđević Stamenkovski, adding that we must learn crucial lessons from our national history, particularly that whenever Serbia stood united, it was able to respond to any challenge.

The Mayor of Šabac, Aleksandar Pajić, said that on August 13, 1806, a battle was fought that echoed far beyond the borders of the region and that it ended in a victory that gave renewed strength to the rebels. He added that today we remember the sacrifice, courage and the sense of responsibility that the generation carried on their shoulders.

The Bishop of Šabac, Jerotej, gave his blessing to the gathering and emphasized that people had gathered in Mišar, the holy Serbian soil, after 220 years, to remember through prayer and express their gratitude to God for all those who, in one of the most glorious moments in Serbian history, stood up to defend their homes, religion, people and homeland at that very place.
Earlier today, Deputy Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Tiosav Janković laid a wreath at the monument to Karađorđe and the heroes of Mišar, accompanied by the Commander of the Training Command, Brigadier General Dragiša Zlatković, and the Head of the General Staff’s Finance Department, Colonel Radovan Damnjanović.

The Battle of Mišar took place on August 13, 1806, near Šabac. It is one of the greatest victories of Serbian rebels led by Vožd Karađorđe against the Ottoman Empire during the First Serbian Uprising.
