Regular Serbian Armed Forces Helicopter Firefighting Training
At the military airbase "Colonel-Pilot Milenko Pavlović" in Batajnica and in the wider Belgrade area, intensive training of the flight crew of the 890th Mixed Helicopter Squadron "Pegazi" (Pegasi) is currently underway to carry out the intended tasks.
The focus of flight training during this period is on practicing firefighting procedures from Mi-17 and H-145 helicopters and providing assistance to the civilian population in emergency situations, which is one of the tasks on which the unit may be engaged. The exercises are carried out within the framework of training flights, in favourable and complex meteorological conditions, during the day and at night. The aviation technical staff is also engaged – for regular maintenance, inspections and preparation of aircraft. Their professional and responsible work ensures a high level of serviceability of aviation equipment and constant readiness of the unit for the safe and efficient execution of tasks in all conditions.
Serbian Armed Forces helicopters are used to extinguish fire when other capacities are insufficient to control the flames or when the terrain is completely inaccessible for extinguishing a fire from the ground. In previous years, they were engaged on extinguishing a series of forest fires and other wildfires, and the implementation of this training ensures high level of proficiency of the flight crew and readiness for aerial firefighting.
This is just one segment of training in the Air Force and Air Defence squadrons, which are primarily intended to provide air fire support to the members of the Serbian Armed Forces in conducting operations, search and rescue, medical evacuation and air transport.
